Summary
This course is designed to provide the underpinning knowledge and required skills needed for an authorised Switching Operator Assistant to assist the Switching Operator in performing switching and access operations on the high voltage network.
Switching Operator Assistant (Non-Electrical) Pathway – Contractor Workers Only. Contractor Workers will be issued with the Switching Operator Assistant (Contractor) Authorisation at the completion of this course. There is no competency portfolio for this pathway.
Portfolio: There is no competency portfolio for the Switching Operator Assistant (Contractor) Authorisation.
Training refresher: Every 3 years by completing course 4030.
Note: The duration of this training course depends on which SOA Authorisation is required by the trainee. The cost for this course is for the trainee to obtain the required Authorisation and is not a reflection of how long the trainee is required to attend the training school.

On successful completion of this module including all prerequisites and assessments you should have these skills:
- Describe the role and associated responsibilities of an authorised Switching Operator Assistant and Switching Operator Recipient.
- Explain the purpose and function of electrical apparatus encountered when performing switching and access activities on the high voltage network.
- Explain high voltage switching principles and practices.
- Explain the basic principles of isolation and earthing.
- Explain the purpose of feeder and substation protection systems.
- Describe and demonstrate the requirements for teamwork in switching.
- Demonstrate the role and responsibilities of the Switching Operator Assistant when assisting with switching operations being carried out on the high voltage network.
